Petenis peringkat dua dunia`Iga Swiatek gagal lolos ke semifinal WTA Finals meskipun ia berhasil mengalahkan petenis pengganti Jessica Pegula yang mundur karena cedera, Daria Kasatkina, dengan 6-1, 6-0 di Riyadh, Arab Saudi, Kamis (7/11).
Awalnya, Swiatek dijadwalkan untuk bertanding melawan Pegula yang merupakan satu-satunya skenario babak fase grup yang menuntut kemenangan bagi dirinya. Swiatek bakal lolos jika Coco Gauff menang atas Barbora Krejcikova.
Namun, Swiatek batal melawan Pegula, sehingga pertandingan Swiatek tidak masuk dalam perhitungan untuk lolos ke semifinal, di samping kekalahan Gauff dari Krejcikova.
“Sejujurnya, saya tidak berpikir itu penting. Kita bermain di lapangan untuk memenangi setiap pertandingan, jadi… Saya tidak memikirkan itu. Saya tidak tahu itu yang terjadi,” kata Swiatek yang mengaku tidak mengetahui perhitungan tersebut, dikutip dari WTA, Jumat.
“Saya cukup profesional untuk selalu memberikan 100 persen apa pun taruhannya.”
Perjalanannya ke semifinal benar-benar usai ketika Krejcikova menyingkirkan Gauff dalam straight set, mengakhiri harapan Swiatek untuk mendapatkan tempat di empat besar.
Jika ia berhasil lolos, Swiatek (23) akan menjadi petenis termuda yang mencapai tiga semifinal WTA Finals berturut-turut sejak Maria Sharapova, yang mencapai empat semifinal berturut-turut mulai 2004 hingga 2007.
Terlepas dari hal itu, pertandingan Swiatek melawan Kasatkina yang berakhir dalam waktu 51 menit menjadi pertandigan terpendek kedua Swiatek tahun ini, setelah kemenangan 6-0, 6-0 atas Anastasia Potapova di babak 16 besar di Roland Garros yang membutuhkan waktu 40 menit.
Ia memenangi 51 dari 74 poin dan mematahkan servis Kasatkina lima dari enam kali.
